Hill wood from the Chittagong frontier

Bandarban is the emptiest district in Bangladesh and the highest. The country's tallest peaks stand here, the Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers cut down through the ranges, and the population thins out to almost nothing across long stretches of hill forest. It is a different country entirely from the Sylhet belt where our Hindi wood grows.

That difference is not only scenery. In Moulvibazar the agar gardens sit on flat, water-heavy ground beside the haors. Here the trees are kept on hill slopes that drain hard and fast, and a tree that grows on a slope grows differently from one standing in the wet. The wood comes out tighter in the grain. Aswad is simply the Arabic for black, and the name is taken from how heavily the resin has settled into this material.

The chips are sold as they were cut and cleaned. Nothing is sanded, coated, waxed, oiled, or weighted. Resin veining shows on the raw faces and runs with the grain, and the pieces vary as hand-cut wood always does — some faces darker where the resin pooled, others lighter where it reached less deeply.

A note on colour

Oud out of the Chittagong hills often carries a faint red hue, and the colour shifts over time after its cut. We do not know the reason for it. It is a natural occurrence, so we would rather mention it here than have it surprise you. It is not a coating, a treatment, or a defect — it is simply what this wood does.

A note on the profile

By the border this is Hindi oud. The trees are Bangladeshi, the soil is Bangladeshi, and the wood never crosses a line to reach us. But a border is a mark on a map, not a change in weather. The same ranges, the same rainfall and the same forest run straight on into Burma, and the men who harvest here have burned wood from the other side and tell us it is essentially the same material. So do not be surprised if this reads closer to a Burmese profile than the orthodox Sylheti Hindi you may know from Moulvibazar. The frontier runs through the hills; it does not run through the climate.

On grading

Traders looking at wood like this would call it Double Super, or Triple Super, or stack another word on top. We don't grade our oud that way. Those labels mean different things in different hands, they are set by whoever is selling, and a number in front of the word "super" tells you nothing you can actually check. We would rather tell you where it grew and what was done to it. It grew in Bandarban. Nothing was done to it.

خشب الجبل من ثغر شيتاغونغ

بندربان أخلى مديريات بنغلاديش وأعلاها. ففيها أعلى قمم البلاد، ويشقّ نهرا سانغو وماتاموهوري سلاسلها الجبلية، ويخفّ السكان حتى يكادوا ينعدمون عبر مساحات طويلة من غابات التلال. وهي بلاد أخرى بالكلية غير حزام سيلهت الذي ينبت فيه عودنا الهندي.

وليس الفرق في المنظر وحده. ففي مولوي بازار تقوم بساتين العود على أرض منبسطة ثقيلة الماء إلى جانب الأهوار، أمّا هنا فتُصان الأشجار على منحدرات سريعة الصرف، والشجرة التي تنبت على منحدر تختلف عن التي تقف في البلل. يخرج الخشب أشدّ التحاماً في ليفه. و"الأسود" إنما أُخذ اسماً من شدة ما استقر في هذه المادة من الراتنج.

تُباع القطع كما قُطعت ونُظّفت. لا صنفرة ولا طلاء ولا شمع ولا تزييت ولا تثقيل. يظهر تعريق الراتنج على الأوجه الخشنة ويجري مع الليف، وتتفاوت القطع كما يتفاوت كل خشب يُقطع باليد.

ملاحظة عن اللون

كثيراً ما يحمل عود مرتفعات شيتاغونغ مسحةً حمراء خفيفة، ويتحوّل لونه في الأيام الأولى بعد القطع. ونحن لا نعلم سبب ذلك. هو أمر طبيعي أُخبرنا به ورأيناه بأعيننا، وآثرنا أن نذكره هنا على أن يفاجئك عند فتح الطرد. وليس هو طلاءً ولا معالجةً ولا عيباً — بل هو طبع هذا الخشب.

ملاحظة عن الطابع

هذا عود هندي بحسب الحدود. فالأشجار بنغلاديشية، والتربة بنغلاديشية، والخشب لا يعبر خطاً ليصلنا. لكن الحدود علامة على خريطة، لا تحوّلاً في المناخ. فالسلاسل نفسها، والأمطار نفسها، والغابة نفسها تمضي مستمرة داخل بورما، والذين يحصدون هنا قد بخّروا من خشب الجانب الآخر ويقولون إنه هو هو في جوهره. فلا يعجبنّك أن يذكّرك هذا الخشب بطابع العود البورمي أكثر مما يذكّرك بالهندي السيلهتي الذي تعرفه من مولوي بازار. الثغر يمرّ في التلال، ولا يمرّ في المناخ.

في مسألة التصنيف

التجار إذا رأوا خشباً كهذا سمّوه "دبل سوبر" أو "تربل سوبر" أو زادوا عليه لفظاً آخر. ونحن لا نصنّف عودنا على هذا النحو. فهذه الألقاب تختلف من يد إلى يد، ويضعها البائع نفسه، ورقمٌ يُوضع أمام كلمة "سوبر" لا يخبرك بشيء يمكنك التحقق منه. ونحن نؤثر أن نخبرك أين نبت وماذا صُنع به. نبت في بندربان. ولم يُصنع به شيء.
