Raw Hindi Oud from the Border Hills of Naikhongchari

At the far edge of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, where Bangladesh gives way to the forested frontier of Myanmar, lies a stretch known locally as Zero Point — the literal border line running through Naikhongchari in Bandarban District. It's from the Aquilaria malaccensis trees rooted in a garden in this remote borderland that Oud Jabal Bandarban was harvested. The name makes the geography plain enough on its own: jabal is simply "mountain," and this is, quite literally, oud from the hilly gardens of Bandarban.

Geography shapes character here as much as it does anywhere else in the oud world. At its heart, this is a Hindi oud but its position on the Myanmar border, and the particular microclimate of these hill forests, lend it a different fragrance than orthodox Hindi ouds. Oud wood across the border in the Myanmar region smells quite the same.

Hold a piece and you feel the weight first. These are large to moderate chips, dense and dark — near-black in places — their surfaces threaded through with visible veins of hardened resin, some splintered into long fibrous blades, others knotting into dense, near-solid clusters of oil. The edges are rough and irregular.

That rawness is deliberate. Every piece leaves our hands exactly as it left the woodcarver's — cleaned, and nothing else. No lead weighting, no wax coating, no paint, no polish of any kind. In a trade where lead and wax are sometimes used to add shine or heft, we've chosen the opposite: total transparency. What you see and weigh in your hand is precisely what the tree grew.

Judged on density, colour, and resin saturation alone, most traders would place this batch comfortably in the Double or Triple Super bracket.

كسرة حدودية نادرة من مرتفعات نايخونغتشاري

من أقصى الشريط الحدودي بين بنغلاديش وبورما، حيث تمتد جبال بندربان الوعرة حتى ما يُعرف محلياً بـ"نقطة الصفر" في ناحية نايخونغتشاري، جاءت هذه الدفعة النادرة من عود جبل بندربان، المستخرجة من أشجار العود المزروعة في حديقة داخل تلك التخوم الجبلية.

للجغرافيا هنا كلمتها في الرائحة كما في كل مكان آخر من عالم العود. فهذا الكسر هندي في جوهره وعمقه، ثقيل ومكثّف كما يُعرف عن عود شبه القارة الهندية. غير أنّ اجتماع قربه من الحدود البورمية مع خصوصية مناخ هذه التخوم الجبلية منحه ظلالاً خفيفة أقرب إلى نكهة العود البورمي — فصوته هندي، وفي حواشيه لكنة أخرى.

من يحمل القطعة يشعر بثقلها أولاً. كسر متوسطة إلى كبيرة الحجم، داكنة تميل إلى السواد، مُلغّمة بعروق الدهن الظاهرة بوضوح على كامل زواياها؛ بعضها متشظٍّ إلى شرائح طويلة رفيعة، وبعضها الآخر متكتّل في كتل صمغية شبه صلبة. حوافها خشنة وغير منتظمة، مشقوقة باليد لا مصقولة للعرض.

وهذا الطابع الخام مقصود تماماً. كل قطعة تصلك على طبيعتها كما خرجت من يد النجّار، بعد التنظيف فقط ولا شيء غيره: بدون رصاص إثقال، بدون شمع، بدون طلاء، وبدون تلميع أو أي إضافة من أي نوع. في سوقٍ يلجأ فيه البعض إلى الرصاص أو الشمع لزيادة الوزن أو اللمعان، اخترنا نحن الشفافية الكاملة — ما تراه وتزنه بيدك هو بالضبط ما أنبتته الشجرة.
