Dark Wood from the Hill Country of Juri

The Juri River rises in the Jampui Hills of Tripura, India, before crossing into Bangladesh through Juri Upazila — a hilly, forested stretch of eastern Moulvibazar District, closed in by Barlekha to the north and by the hills of Tripura and Assam to the south and east. Tea gardens climb its low ridges, and agar gardens are tended in their shade — part of the same Moulvibazar soil whose Agar-Attar earned Geographical Indication recognition in February 2024, a distinction rooted first in neighbouring Barlekha's centuries-old craft, and reaching, across the same hill-and-garden landscape, into Juri itself.

Oud Hindi King comes from a plantation tree of Aquilaria malaccensis that came to resin naturally — infected in its own time, not wounded or inoculated to force the process. Split and sorted by hand, the pieces run from slender splinters to broad, thumb-thick slivers, their outer bands deep blackish-brown to near-charcoal where resin settled heaviest, easing toward a lighter, straw-toned heartwood at the freshly split edges — the natural range of hand-split, unoiled wood. True to the Hindi character Sylhet is known for, expect a deep, earthy warmth edging into honeyed sweetness on the burn — heavier and more animalic than Malaysia's brighter styles, closer to the classic subcontinental profile connoisseurs seek out by name.

ينبع نهر جوري من تلال جامبوي في ولاية تريبورا الهندية، ليعبر الحدود داخلاً إلى بنغلاديش عبر مديرية جوري - ركنٌ جبليّ كثير الغابات في الطرف الشرقي من مديرية مولوي بازار، تحدّه بارليخا من الشمال، وتلال تريبورا وآسام من الجنوب والشرق. هناك تتسلّق حدائق الشاي التلال المنخفضة، وتُزرع أشجار العود في ظلالها - ضمن تربة مولوي بازار ذاتها التي نال عودها وعطرها شهادة "المؤشر الجغرافي" في فبراير 2024، وهو تكريمٌ يعود أصله إلى حرفة بارليخا المجاورة الممتدة منذ قرون، ويتّسع، ضمن ذات المشهد الجبلي المزروع، ليشمل جوري نفسها.

العود الهندي الملكي يأتي من شجرة مستزرعة من Aquilaria malaccensis تكوّن راتنجها بشكل طبيعي - إصابة حدثت في وقتها الخاص، لا جرحًا أو تلقيحًا أُحدث لتسريع العملية. تُشقّ القطع وتُفرز يدويًا، وتتراوح أحجامها بين شظايا رفيعة وقطعٍ أكثر سُمكًا، بلونٍ خارجي بنيّ داكن يقارب السواد حيث تركّز الراتنج بكثافة، يتدرّج نحو قلبٍ أفتح لونًا بلون القش عند حواف الشق الحديث - وهذا هو المدى الطبيعي للخشب المشقوق يدويًا وغير المزيّت. وكما يليق بطابع "الهندي" الذي اشتهرت به سيلهت، يُنتظر من هذا الخشب عند إحراقه دفءٌ ترابي عميق يميل إلى العسلية - أثقل وأقرب إلى الطابع الحيواني الخفيف من الطرز الماليزية الأكثر إشراقًا، وأقرب إلى الطراز الهندي الفرعي القارّي الذي يبحث عنه هواة العود باسمه.
