Type: Indo-Burmi Oud (harvested on the Bangladesh side of the border)

From the Hills of Bandarban

For a long time now we wanted to collect oud from the Chittagong Hills. Ever since we heard a distiller and agarwood trader from Sylhet praise the wood of the Chittagong Pahars, we went after it. But it was hard. Compared to Sylhet, the business of agarwood is smaller in these hills. Some parts are risky due to the volatile situation created by several armed ethnic groups, though the frontier itself is protected by the Bangladesh Border Guard.

We didn't go to those risky parts of the mountain. This oud is from a peaceful garden owned by a Chittagonian, in the hills of Naikhongchari. While Sylhet and Moulvibazar share their border with Assam, Naikhongchari shares its own with Burma — and that single fact of geography is what sets this wood apart from everything else we carry.

من تلال بندربان

طالما أردنا أن نجمع عوداً من تلال شيتاغونغ. فمنذ أن سمعنا مقطّراً وتاجر عود من سيلهت يثني على خشب تلال شيتاغونغ، ونحن نسعى إليه. لكن الأمر لم يكن يسيراً؛ فتجارة العود في هذه التلال أصغر منها في سيلهت، وبعض أجزائها فيه مخاطرة بسبب الوضع المضطرب الذي تصنعه جماعات مسلحة، وإن كان الشريط الحدودي نفسه تحميه حرس الحدود البنغلاديشي.

ولم نذهب إلى تلك الأجزاء الخطرة من الجبل. هذا العود من بستان آمن يملكه رجل من أهل شيتاغونغ، في تلال نايخونغتشاري. وبينما تشارك سيلهت ومولوي بازار حدودهما مع آسام، تشارك نايخونغتشاري حدودها مع بورما — وهذه الحقيقة الجغرافية وحدها هي ما يميّز هذا الخشب عمّا سواه مما نحمل.
