The loose wood of Sujanagar

East of Barlekha, where Moulvibazar runs up against the Patharia hills and the Assam border, the land settles into a country of tea gardens, haor water, and homestead groves. Sujanagar sits in this corner.

The Aquilaria malaccensis here is garden-grown — planted, tended, and cut on the owner's own terms — and the wood that comes down from it is worked by hand, one piece at a time.

Zora is what the hand leaves behind. When a resinous log is opened and cleaned, the blade follows the seams, and the wood separates into thin flakes and splinters — too small to shape, too resinous to discard. These are gathered, sorted, and sold exactly as they come off the block. Nothing is turned, sanded, or coated. The cut faces are left raw, with the grain and resin veining showing as the knife found them.

An honest note on grade: this is not the dense, blocky material a collector keeps under glass and burns a shaving at a time — for that, see Hindi Oud Super. Zora is lighter and thinner, chip for chip. What it gives you is a generous quantity of true Sujanagar wood at a price that lets you burn it daily rather than ration it.

خشب سُجانَغار المُفرَّط

شرق بارليكا، حيث تلتقي مولفي بازار بتلال باثاريا وحدود آسام، تمتد أرض من بساتين الشاي والأهوار والبيوت التي تحيط بها الأشجار. في هذه الزاوية تقع سُجانَغار. أشجار Aquilaria malaccensis هنا مزروعة في البساتين — تُغرس وتُرعى وتُقطع بقرار صاحبها — والخشب الذي ينزل منها يُعمل باليد، قطعةً قطعة.

والزورا هي ما تتركه اليد. حين يُفتح الجذع المُعطَّر ويُنظَّف، تسير النصلة مع عروق الراتنج، فينفصل الخشب إلى رقائق وشظايا رفيعة — أصغر من أن تُنحت، وأغنى بالراتنج من أن تُرمى. تُجمع وتُفرز وتُباع كما خرجت من القطعة تماماً. لا خراطة ولا صنفرة ولا طلاء. تُترك أوجه القطع خشنة كما وجدها النصل، يظهر فيها الليف وتعريق الراتنج.

ملاحظة صادقة عن المرتبة: هذه ليست القطع الكثيفة الغليظة التي يحفظها الهاوي في صندوقه ويُبخِّر منها شظية واحدة في المرة — ولمن أرادها فلينظر عود هندي سوبر. الزورا أخف وأرفع، قطعةً بقطعة، وتمضي على الجمر أسرع. لكنها تمنحك كمية وافرة من خشب سُجانَغار الأصيل بسعر يسمح لك أن تُبخِّر به كل يوم لا أن تُقنِّنه.
