The long wood of Barlekha

Barlekha upazila holds two landscapes at once. Its low ground runs down into Hakaluki Haor — one of the largest inland wetlands in Bangladesh, a basin that swells into open water through the monsoon and drains back to grazing land and fishing beels in the dry months. Above that basin, on the higher land toward the eastern hills, the agar gardens are kept. Same upazila, two different worlds, and the trees sit in the drier one.

The Aquilaria malaccensis here is garden-grown — planted and tended on the owner's land, cut when the owner decides. Nothing about it is taken from forest.

Sallah is a grade defined by shape rather than by weight. When a resinous log is opened, the cutter reads the grain and works with it; where the resin has run in long continuous lines rather than pooling in knots, the wood releases in long, slender lengths. Those are set aside and sold as Sallah — Seufi, as some buyers in the Gulf know it. They are left exactly as the blade produced them: no sanding, no coating, no oiling. The cut faces are raw, and the resin veining shows along the length of each piece rather than in patches.

The shape has practical value. A long stick can be snapped to whatever length the mabkhara wants, so one piece serves several sittings — take a fingerbreadth for yourself in the afternoon, a longer length when guests arrive. Sallah also presents well, which is why it moves as gift wood: the pieces lie flat and orderly in a box in a way broken Muri never will.

An honest note on grade: Sallah describes form, not resin content. Some sticks in a batch carry heavy resin along their whole length; others are lighter where the infection reached less deeply. That spread is normal and we do not sort it away. What we can say plainly is where it grew and that nothing has been added to it.

خشب بارليكا الطويل

تحمل ناحية بارليكا وجهين من الأرض في وقت واحد. فمنخفضها ينحدر إلى هور هاكالوكي — أحد أكبر الأهوار الداخلية في بنغلاديش، حوضٌ يمتلئ ماءً مفتوحاً في موسم الأمطار، ثم ينحسر في الجفاف فيعود مراعيَ ومصايد. وفوق ذلك الحوض، على الأرض المرتفعة جهة التلال الشرقية، تُصان بساتين العود. ناحية واحدة وعالمان، والأشجار في العالم الأجفّ منهما.

أشجار Aquilaria malaccensis هنا مزروعة في البساتين — تُغرس وتُرعى في أرض صاحبها، وتُقطع حين يقرر هو. ولا شيء منها مأخوذ من الغابة.

و"الصلّة" مرتبة يحدّدها الشكل لا الوزن. حين يُفتح الجذع المُعطَّر، يقرأ القاطع اتجاه الليف ويسير معه؛ فحيث جرى الراتنج في خطوط طويلة متصلة بدل أن يتجمّع في عُقد، ينفصل الخشب في أطوال رفيعة ممتدة. تُفرز هذه وتُباع باسم الصلّة — أو "السيوفي" كما يعرفها بعض المشترين في الخليج. وتُترك تماماً كما أخرجها النصل: لا صنفرة ولا طلاء ولا تزييت. أوجه القطع خشنة، ويظهر تعريق الراتنج ممتداً بطول القطعة لا مبقّعاً فيها.

وللشكل فائدة عملية. فالعود الطويل يُكسر إلى الطول الذي تريده المبخرة، فتخدم القطعة الواحدة أكثر من مجلس — قدر إصبع لنفسك بعد العصر، وطولٌ أوفى حين يحضر الضيف. كما أن الصلّة حسنة العرض، ولهذا تمضي كخشب هدايا: تستوي القطع في العلبة مرتّبةً مستويةً على نحو لا تبلغه الموري المكسّرة أبداً.

ملاحظة صادقة عن المرتبة: الصلّة تصف الشكل لا نسبة الراتنج. فبعض القطع في الدفعة تحمل راتنجاً ثقيلاً على كامل طولها، وبعضها أخف حيث لم تتعمّق الإصابة. وهذا التفاوت طبيعي ولا نُخفيه بالفرز. والذي نقوله بوضوح هو أين نبت، وأنه لم يُضَف إليه شيء.
