What You're Receiving

This batch is dominated by long, feathered splinters — the wood has fractured lengthwise along its natural grain, giving each piece an elongated shape. Colour runs from a muted grey-brown on the outer fibers to a deeper tobacco-brown where resin has settled into the heartwood. You'll notice small round bore holes scattered through a number of pieces — most probably the insect galleries that triggered the tree's resin response. Expect a mix of paler, lightly-infused splinters alongside darker, resin-heavy shards.

Understanding the Grade: "Hindi", "Muri" and "Jhura"

Hindi marks this as agarwood from the Assam–Sylhet belt of the Indian subcontinent. Sylheti/Assamese Hindi oud is historically the most loved by the Arabs.

Muri is the broken-chip grade.

Jhura narrows that further to material that has split into thin, elongated splinters.

Afdal is simply the word we use in the name to distinguish between the Muris we carry. It does not refer to Afdal in the sense of being of the best quality.

From Shujanagar

Shujanagar union, inside Barlekha upazila, is where Bangladesh's agarwood industry is generally dated to, with cultivation here going back roughly four centuries. Barlekha today is home to about 400 small agar-attar distilleries, producing around 2,000 litres of agar attar a year between them, locally called "liquid gold." It's a working economy, garden to distillery to export. Videos posted by artisanal houses on traditional distillation technique have sparked a much-needed new aspiration among young distillers.

ما الذي تستلمه

تغلب على هذه الدفعة الشظايا الطويلة المريشة — فقد انشق الخشب طولاً مع ليفه الطبيعي، فجاءت كل قطعة ممتدة الشكل. ويتدرج اللون من رمادي بني خافت على الألياف الخارجية إلى بني تبغي أعمق حيث استقر الراتنج في القلب. وستلاحظ ثقوباً مستديرة صغيرة متناثرة في عدد من القطع — وهي على الأغلب أنفاق الحشرات التي أثارت استجابة الشجرة الراتنجية. وتوقّع خليطاً من شظايا أفتح قليلة التشبّع إلى جانب أخرى أدكن غنية بالراتنج.

معنى "هندي" و"موري" و"جهورا"

هندي يدل على أن هذا العود من حزام آسام وسيلهت في شبه القارة الهندية، والعود السيلهتي الآسامي هو تاريخياً أحبّ الأعواد إلى العرب.

موري هي مرتبة الكسر المكسّرة.

جهورا تخصّص ذلك أكثر في المادة التي انشقت إلى شظايا رفيعة ممتدة.

أفضل هي مجرد كلمة نستعملها في الاسم للتمييز بين أنواع الموري عندنا، وليس المقصود بها أنها الأجود مرتبةً.

من سُجانَغار

اتحاد سُجانَغار، داخل ناحية بارليكا، هو الموضع الذي يُؤرّخ إليه عادةً قيام صناعة العود في بنغلاديش، والزراعة هنا ترجع إلى نحو أربعة قرون. وتضم بارليكا اليوم نحو ٤٠٠ معمل تقطير صغير للعطر، تنتج فيما بينها نحو ٢٠٠٠ لتر من دهن العود سنوياً، يُسمّى محلياً "الذهب السائل". اقتصاد عامل من البستان إلى المعمل إلى التصدير.
