Real Oud or Oud Notes? How to Tell What You Are Buying

More oud is sold each year than could possibly exist. That is not a figure of speech — it is arithmetic. The quantity of agarwood distilled worldwide cannot account for the number of bottles on shelves carrying the word.

Most of the difference is not fraud. It is an accord doing an honest job under an ambiguous name. But some of it is fraud, and since we sit in a country that produces the real thing, we would rather be clear about the distinction than benefit from the confusion.

What real oud is

Agarwood forms inside Aquilaria trees. When the heartwood is wounded or infected, the tree floods the site with a dark, dense resin as a defence. That resinous wood is agarwood — oud, agar, আগর.

To make oil, the wood is soaked and then hydro-distilled, often for days. The yields are small and the labour is considerable, and the character of the result changes with the region, the age of the resin, the soaking time and the hand of the distiller. Two oils from the same district can smell like different materials.

Bangladesh — Sylhet, Moulvibazar, the Chittagong Hill Tracts — produces some of the best agarwood in the world. Much of it leaves the country and comes back with someone else's name on it.

What an oud note is

An oud accord is a composition built from other materials to evoke agarwood: smoky, animalic, woody, leathery, sweet in the base. Some are built from synthetics, some blend synthetics with small quantities of real oud, some use other resins and woods to gesture at the same shape.

We want to be plain about this: there is nothing wrong with an oud accord. Some are beautiful. They are also the only way most people will ever wear something in this style, because real oud oil at a wearable concentration puts a bottle beyond most household budgets. A well-made oud-note fragrance is a legitimate product honestly described.

The dishonesty is only ever in the description.

How to tell — and how not to

Here is where most guides overpromise. They will tell you that real oud is thick, or dark, or that it smells barnyard at first. Some does. Plenty does not. Colour and viscosity vary enormously with distillation method and age, and a novice smelling an unfamiliar material has no baseline to judge against. If someone tells you that you will simply know, they are selling you confidence rather than information.

What actually works is duller and more reliable.

Do the arithmetic. Pure oud oil trades in ranges you can look up. If a 12ml bottle of "pure oud" costs less than the raw material would, the answer is settled before you have opened it. Price is not proof of quality, but impossible price is proof of something.

Read the description, not the name. A house that uses real oud will say so, specifically — origin, sometimes the distillation. A house using an accord will describe the character rather than the material. Vagueness is a choice.

Ask directly. "Is this natural oud oil, or an oud accord?" A seller who answers plainly is telling you the truth either way. A seller who becomes evasive, or answers a different question, has told you what you needed to know.

Give it time on skin. Not as a purity test — it is not one — but because natural materials tend to develop more unevenly than compositions built for consistency. A fragrance that smells identical at minute five and hour four was made to be stable. That is a design decision, not a crime, but it is information.

How we handle it

We separate the two. Our oud attars state what is in them. Our raw agarwood is sold unpolished, undyed and with no oil infusion — three words that between them cover most of the tricks in the chip trade, since polishing hides grade, dye simulates resin, and infusion adds weight and smell that the wood does not have.

It costs us sales. Someone who wants to believe they are buying pure oud for 900 taka will find a seller who lets them. We would rather they were not us.
